“Questions you cannot answer are usually far better for you than answers you cannot question.”
Sophie Newman is licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist in Georgia offering therapy to adult individuals, couples, families, and other relationship structures. Sophie specializes in interpersonal/intrapersonal relational systems and sex therapy.
As your therapeutic guide, Sophie will use an active, creative, directive, and holistic approach to help you access healing. She seeks to empower her clients to author and share their own meaning of life’s experiences, while also challenging them through compassion, curiosity, and humor. Her hope is to be a resource and collaborator each step of the way. Her work is grounded in Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Experiential Family Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy. She utilizes creative interventions (i.e. art, mindfulness techniques, tangible homework, writing exercises) to foster deeper self understanding. She believes in collaboration with clients to identify helpful interventions rather than using a one size fits all therapeutic model.
Her expertise in lifespan development helps offer insights from a holistic understanding of the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and sexual changes that may occur throughout life transitions. Prior to becoming a therapist, Sophie developed expertise in conflict management, human development, relationship dynamics, religious trauma, and sexual health. She enjoys working with a variety of concerns and populations, having a special interest in working with individuals/relationship systems that struggle with intimacy, identity, and sexuality. Her goal is to nurture positive experiences with intimacy and sexuality through acceptance, communication, knowledge, and trust. Sophie strives to provide an environment where humans from all walks of life and identities feel welcome and safe. If you feel that she might be a good fit for you, feel free to reach out for a complimentary phone consultation.
Sophie lives in Decatur with her partner and hound mix, Ari. You can often find her sharing meals with friends, laughing at comedy shows, or writing movie reviews on Letterboxd. Sophie’s graduate training was completed in Marriage & Family Therapy from Mercer University Medical School and undergraduate training in Human Development & Family Science from The University of Georgia. She is currently working towards sex therapy certification with the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) and receiving clinical supervision from Erika Pluhar, PhD, EdS, LMFT, LPC, CST-S.
