Group psychotherapy is a method of change through interpersonal relationships. The primary power of group therapy is in the interaction of the members and the spirit of seeking and giving help. Group cohesion is thought of as one of the most powerful curative components of group psychotherapy. Being able to witness others work in a therapeutic context can offer the opportunity for group members to learn through observation, reflect on their own growth and change, and experience a sense of belonging.
Types of Group Psychotherapy
Support groups can be ongoing or time-limited, and help individuals who are dealing with a shared challenge to experience emotional support, feel less alone, and share resources and problems together.
Psychoeducational groups focus on teaching participants specific skills and tend to be time-limited.
Interpersonal process groups are ongoing and help individuals learn about their own behavior in the context of group interactions. Process groups are an excellent, safe place to receive feedback and to practice new ways of being in relationship with others.
